The last thing shoppers at Eastland expected was to stop at the lights and have Shrek the Musical break out in front of them.

The Ringwood Spiegeltent needed to reach a local audience on social media and cut through feeds that are usually full of announcements and ads.

Rather than promoting the show in the usual way, the performance was staged at the traffic lights outside Eastland Shopping Centre in Ringwood.

When the lights went red, Dolly Diamond and students from Ringwood High School, dressed for Shrek the Musical, stepped into the intersection and launched into I’m a Believer. Traffic stopped. Phones came out. Drivers watched it unfold in real time including... is that Betty White?

The performance was fully choreographed, while the setting, timing, and audience reaction were not. The cast combined a recognisable performer with students from the actual production, grounding the moment in the local community.

The footage was cut into a longer hero video capturing the full performance, along with shorter edits designed for social feeds. The content ran across Maroondah City Council channels and was shared locally.

The result was strong local reach and engagement across social channels, helping drive awareness and attendance for the Ringwood Spiegeltent. I directed, filmed, and edited the project.
